A thought starter:
Democracy requires authentic discourse.
In future election cycles, we must demand that politicians and campaigns pledge not to employ tactics that corrode the authenticity of civil discourse.
What would an authentic election pledge include? What norms should we establish for healthy elections?
How can we hold candidates, parties and other actors to account?
Imagine campaigns willing to take a pledge to defend authentic discourse:
NO FALSE ACCOUNTS
NO FAKE NEWS SITES
NO FAKE GROUPS
NO DEEP FAKES OR ALTERED TEXT, VIDEO OR AUDIO
NO USE OF HACKED MATERIAL
NO ILLICIT ACQUISITION OR USE OF DATA.
PROMISE to reprimand supporters deploying inauthentic tactics.
PROMISE to immediately report illicit activity to the platforms, FBI, DHS and FEC, as appropriate.
PROMISE to condemn disinformation campaigns against your opponents and use all available channels to make your supporters aware when disinformation is employed on your behalf.
